This graphite and ink portrait drawing is about the intimacy of meditation and the need and ability to find beauty in self-reflective thought escape in any location. Although the figure is immersed in water, the meditative pose allows the viewer to stop time for a moment and participate with the subject.

Meet the Artist: Maxine Nodel
Since I was a child, I've always created design-based drawings by intuitively incorporating patterns found in nature and imagination. Today, I continue to combine nature-based patterns and textures, such as elements of the Fibonacci spiral/sequence, etc. with traditional aesthetics to create visual metaphors and poetry. The design elements in my work are symbolic underpinnings that depict how everything in the universe is divinely connected.
I work primarily in graphite, ink, color pencils, and pastel on smooth Bristol plate paper with subject matter that includes the human form, nature, items from antiquity, and everyday objects. I juxtapose these literal elements with metamorphic design to create surrealistic and poetic narratives.
